Pussy touch (chicken blood marble)
I came up with the idea while listening to audiobooks about the rise and fall of religions. One by one they arrive, borrow names from the weather, and then disappear. The thunder god retires. The sun god melts into someone else’s sun. What stays behind is stone monuments that outlive the names attached to them.
So I wanted to make a small monument that isn’t a god but still looks up the way old statues did. A cat felt right: familiar, funny, stubborn, and completely unbothered by our big ideas. Mine leans forward, paw open, one finger pointed to the sky somewhere between The Creation of Adam and a cheeky “look!” The star-shaped pupils are little compasses; when the light hits, each flares like a tiny cosmos. That’s the feeling I wanted: curiosity with a spark.
The title, “Pussy Touch,” is a joke and a pressure point. It’s cat and kink, petting and permission. People take religion very seriously; people take their pets very seriously. Humor lets me stand in the middle without preaching. The piece isn’t asking to be touched so much as asking you to notice the moment before you would the famous almost-touch on the Sistine ceiling. For me, the charge is in the gap.
I used polished chicken-blood marble because the stone already looks alive, and each piece is unique in its surface pattern.
I’ve spent years looking at how people try to make meaning from the sky. This cat does the same thing I do: it looks up, then it looks back at the hand that feeds it. Protector, owner, god, star whatever you call it today will have a new name tomorrow. The stone will still be here, grinning.
If this is found a thousand years from now, with all our names forgotten, I’m fine with it being read as a playful idol to curiosity. Not a commandment. A nudge.
