Images of cartoons and toys form a fundamental role in making up the visual landscape of our childhood memory.

By appropriating from mass-media and popular culture, this Ferdi B. Dick bronze sculpture reminisces nostalgic iconography by using banal references from popular visual motifs found in childhood cartoons. He deviates from the original reference by adding an element of nostalgic reflection and humour.

“Growling Nostalgia” was partially inspired by the early beginnings of television in South Africa. It is particularly the character of a dog named Brakanjan of a 1981 television series by the same name that evoked memories of childhood security, familial togetherness and the family as a tightly-knit pack. This figure become wistful musing on childhood, innocence and memories of bygone days.

We sell limited editions of artwork. This means we will only produce a certain number of works in a specific shape, size, or colour. Standard orders are normally dispatched within 7 to 14 days, while pre-orders will be dispatched within 40 to 70 days. Each piece is shipped in a protective box or crate.

Duties, VAT, and other local taxes are charged upon delivery and are not included in the displayed price. The buyer is responsible for clearing these taxes at delivery.
